OSU Collegiate Council on World Affairs Wins International Awards and Recognition

From October 24-27, 15 members of Ohio State’s Collegiate Council on World Affairs (CCWA) participated in the National Collegiate Security Conference (NCSC) hosted by Georgetown University in Bethesda, Maryland.  NCSC offers a diverse range of creative crisis committees, with OSU delegates participating in committees ranging from the Brazilian Senate to Mena’s Nicaraguan Revolutionary Army.  Over four days of intense debate Alec Ansusinha in the Tammany Hall committee expanded his political and business influence while Luke Lundy gained political leverage through the local clergy, with dynamic crises evolving in each session as delegates scrambled to address the problems arising in their committees. After four days of committee, the conference came to a close at the award ceremony, where CCWA member Paul Peters was recognized with a Verbal Commendation while Luke Lundy and Erik Leiden received Honorable Delegate Awards

Less than three weeks later, from November 14-17, another group of 15 delegates from CCWA travelled to the city of brotherly love to attend the 47th annual University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC), the second largest international intercollegiate conference in North America. With over 1200 delegates from 82 schools (including many of the top-ranked schools from the United States, Canada, and Japan) UPMUNC prides itself on being one of the most competitive conferences, featuring both conventional committees such as United Nations General Assembly and ECOSOC committees, but also dynamic crises such as Israel/Hezbollah 2006 Joint Crises. Over four days of debate, and often working sessions late into the night drafting policies and ideas, delegates drafted and passed comprehensive resolutions on many of the issues facing our world today. Closing ceremonies proved to be an incredible moment for CCWA, where they took home 2 Verbal Commendations (Jorge Bucki Lopez in the United Nations Security Council 1956 Committee and Alex Pantich in the Kashmiri Secession 2020 Committee), 1 Honorable Delegation Award (Matt Kaido and Jacob Bogart in the World Trade Organization), and 1 Best Delegation Award  (Erik Leiden and Sarah Montell in the World Health Organization), earning awards over delegates from some of the top schools in the world whose Model UN programs have been around for nearly 60 years.

The Collegiate Council on World Affairs is only in its second year of travelling to intercollegiate Model United Nations conferences; however it has already asserted Ohio State as one of the top schools on the circuit and garnered attention both from other teams and premier Model United Nations websites. You can check out the College Council on World Affairs website

We want to congratulate the teams on their successes and wish them good luck at the Harvard National Model United Nations Conference and Chicago Model United Nations Conference this spring semester!
