Professor Janet Box-Steffensmeier was awarded the University Distinguished Scholar Award in 2012

Professor Janet Box-Steffensmeier was awarded the University Distinguished Scholar Award in 2012. The Distinguished Scholar Award, established in 1978, recognizes exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research. The award is supported by the Office of Research. Recipients are nominated by their departments and chosen by a committee of senior faculty, including several past recipients of the award.

Dr. Box-Steffensmeier is the Vernal G. Riffe Professor in Government and Politics in the Department of Political Science and also President of the Midwest Political Science Association.  She is a leading scholar of political behavior and political methodology and has received numerous awards for her teaching and scholarship.  Her research focuses on the study of mass politics, legislatures, and how best to capture change, dynamics, and time. 

She has authored 29 peer-reviewed journal articles, 12 of which are featured in top political science journals. As a teacher and advisor, she has been awarded the Distinguished Undergraduate Mentor Award and the Excellence in Mentorship Award. Her mentoring, particularly with women, has been recognized with a named scholarship award – the Janet Box-Steffensmeier Graduate Student Award.

Within the department, Dr. Box-Steffensmeier is the Director of the Program in Statistics and Methodology and the Director of the Political Research Lab.  Additionally, she teaches the Interactive Television Program in Advanced Political Methodology (iTV), a cooperative program run between four participating CIC institutions (Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Wisconsin-Madison). The program was created to provide advanced political methodology training to graduate students from the member institutions.

In the 2012-2013 school year, Dr. Box-Steffensmeier will be teaching POLITSC 1100: Introduction to American Politics, POLITSC 7683: Formal Theories of Politics III, POLITSC 2367: Contemporary Issues in American Politics, and POLITSC 7788: Selected Topics in Political Methodology.
