What I did with my Political Science Degree - TJ Beavers

Fulbright Teaching Assistant

TJ Beavers

In 2016, after completing his degree in Political Science, TJ Beavers moved to Warsaw, Poland, to begin a Fulbright fellowship as a teaching assistant in the Department of Political Science and Journalism at the University of Warsaw. In this role, he taught Polish students about American government and society while conducting research on Polish perspectives regarding U.S. political issues.

After completing the grant, TJ returned to the United States to pursue his next goal: earning a law degree with the intention of becoming a public health lawyer. He graduated from Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law and now works as an associate at Goodwin Procter, continuing a career rooted in public service and advocacy.

TJ credits the Department of Political Science for shaping his academic and professional trajectory. During his time at Ohio State, he gained access to transformative experiences, including an internship at the Parliament of Canada, serving on the Undergraduate Studies Committee to improve the student experience, and learning from some of the most accomplished and student-focused faculty in the country. The rigor of the coursework and the high expectations of professors helped TJ develop as an analyst, writer, problem-solver, and engaged citizen.

Reflecting on his experiences, TJ offers one piece of advice to prospective and current political science majors: a degree in political science is not a rigid path limited to law or academia. It is a program that cultivates critical skills and opens doors to countless opportunities. “Choose political science because you are passionate about understanding politics and society—not because of a narrow view of what comes next. If you let your interests guide you, you will graduate prepared for any future you envision.”
