Kim Byung-ryull is Professor of International Relations at Korea National Defense University and a 2011-2012 visiting scholar at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies.

Kim is recognized as a leading expert on the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute between Korea and Japan. He served on the South Korean Presidential
Commission on True History for Peace in Northeast Asia, and was the director of Dokdo issues in the Office of the President of the Republic of Korea. In addition, he currently holds the rank of colonel in the R.O.K. Army.

He is author of several books, including Dokdo or Takeshima? (Dada Media, 1996), The Laws of War (Korea Research Institute for Military Affairs, 1997), A Comprehensive Collection of Records on Dokdo (Dada Media, 1998), Japanese Claims on Dokdo (Dada Media, 2001), and Dokdo, co-authored with Naito Seichu (Dada Media, 2006).

Kim is a graduate of Korea Military Academy, and he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in law from Korea University.
