Andrew T. Price-Smith is Director of the Energy, Environment and Security Program (ESP), Director of the nascent Global Health Program, and Associate Professor of Political Science at Colorado College. He held previous appointments at both the Earth Institute and the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University, and at the University of South Florida. He also served as Interim Chair of Environmental Science at Colorado College from 2009-2010. He specializes in analyses of the effects of disease, environmental change, and energy scarcity on the security of nations.

Price-Smith is author of several books, notably Contagion and Chaos: Disease, Ecology and National Security in the Era of Globalization (MIT Press, 2009) which recently won a Choice Magazine Award for Outstanding Academic Volume of 2009. His other volumes include The Health of Nations (MIT Press, 2002), which was short-listed for the Grawemeyer Award, Plagues and Politics (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2001), and the forthcoming US Foreign Policy: Enduring Challenges (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2012/13). He has also written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles on the relationship between environmental change, health, energy and governance. He is working on another book, Crude Deceptions: Energy and International Security for MIT Press.

Price-Smith has testified on climate change, disease, and international security before the U.S. House Science and Technology Committee. In addition, he acts as Associate Advisor for the U.S. National Intelligence Council, and as an advisor to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DOD) and the US Army War College (DOD). He has also served as a consultant to the United States Institute of Peace, the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank, the US Environmental Protection Agency.

He earned his PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1999, and did his post-doctoral work at Columbia University.
