Incoming Freshman Interns as Campaign Manager

Kelly Harrop Intern as Campaign Manager

As an incoming freshman majoring in political science, Kelly Harrop, has already begun making her mark in the political world. During this past summer, Kelly had the opportunity to work as a campaign manager for candidate David Hogan. This experience has been an incredible first look into the many career options available to students majoring in political science.

Kelly explains more about her time as campaign manager and what she looks forward to with her arrival at Ohio State below:

“I became involved with David Hogan's campaign through my internship working with the Statehouse Caucus at the Ohio Democratic Party.  I was helping with a candidate training session they were putting on when David and I began talking, eventually we decided to meet outside of the training which is where he asked me to manage his campaign.  Currently, my work with the campaign involves a lot of work analyzing voter demographics.  We form long lists of potential donors, volunteers, and voters.  I then take these lists and use them to form calling lists and mailing lists.  Also, managing is a lot of organizing.  I work to plan fundraisers and events where David can get out and interact with the voters.  I organize volunteers to attend events, such as parades and festivals, where they pass out literature and can answer questions about David and his campaign.  I am particularly interested in the marketing side of the campaign so I like to use things like Facebook and Twitter to see how the constituents respond to certain issues or ideas.

At Ohio State I am looking forward to learning more about campaign strategy and selecting tactics to used based off of voter demographics.  I am also excited to learn about how politics functions both in the United States and foreign countries and how those functions affect the residents of those nations.

I cannot wait to become a part of the culture that is Ohio State.  I am very excited to attend sporting events as well as to become involved with student organizations.  However, I think the thing I am most excited about is becoming a part of the broad network that is Ohio State and taking full advantage of all of the educational opportunities Ohio State has to offer like internships and study abroad.  I know that wherever I go my work as a Buckeye will be recognized.”

We welcome Kelly and we look forward to following her over the next few years. To learn more about getting involved with internships please visit our page.
