Topics covered will include the debates over independence, the principles and compromises that informed the writing of the Federal Constitution, the "democratization" of American political culture over the first half of the 19th century, and the struggle over slavery, and between state and federal authority, that culminated in the Civil War. The guiding question throughout will be what, if anything, it means to be "American."
