OSU Software Availability
SPSS v12
for Windows can be downloaded directly free at:
http://softwaretogo.osu.edu/
In order to get the license code necessary to use it, you must sign an
end-user agreement at OIT (Office of Information Technologies) Customer
Services, 512 Baker Systems. SPSS is too large to expect to download through a
modem connection. You can get SPSS v12 on a CD from OIT if you bring over an
unused (shrink-wrapped) 74-minute CD. SPSS requires yearly license codes and
must be returned if you leave the university. (Note that SPSS 12 will not work
with Windows 95.) [SYSTAT v10.2.05 is available under the same procedures as
SPSS.]
STATA
9 can be purchased on the STATA GradPlan, explained at
http://www.stata.com/order/new/edu/gradplans/gp-campus.html
Pricing can be found at the link above as well. STATA is
available in PAL, Derby 0150, & the experimental lab (2049A).
RATS
is available on some of the computers in PAL.
VirusScan is free on OSU site license -- download directly at: http://softwaretogo.osu.edu/ VirusScan 7.1 will work with only Windows 2000 and higher; use VirusScan 4.5.1 for other operating systems. There are frequent new “virus definition” files available at that site as new viruses are discovered, and it is important to download those periodically. People with home computers should use a virus program frequently and keep current in virus protection. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to virus data file periodically and run the VirusScan program on the shared computer in their office.
The "stat" computer in 2049A Derby contains several advanced statistical programs (including SAS & HLM) and is the fastest computer available in the department for graduate student use.
To move data between statistical packages (such as from SPSS to STATA, or vice versa), STAT/Transfer is available on the stat computer in 2049A Derby.
Microsoft products can be purchased through the Buckeye Bundle, explained at http://www.oit.ohio-state.edu/site_license/mslicense/index.html
Eudora and Netscape are available free on University site licenses and can be downloaded directly at: http://softwaretogo.osu.edu/
OSU site license info for software is at: http://www.oit.ohio-state.edu/site_license/ Math and statistics programs for which there are university site licenses include ArcGIS (free), Maple (free), Mathematica (Student Version - $30 yearly), MATLAB ($150), MINITAB (free), SAS ($29), SHAZAM (free), SigmaPlot ($32.99), SPSS (free), SYSTAT (free), and Nvivo ($33) and N6 ($33) for qualitative analysis. As explained at the site license info web site, it is necessary to give the computing center a blank CD in exchange for some programs. Special prices for Adobe products are also available through the softwaretogo web site. Some Macintosh programs are also available on OSU site license -- see the site license web site and the softwaretogo websites listed above. (Graduate assistants are considered to be staff for some of the university site licenses.) Remember to read all license requirements and abide their regulations; call OIT at 688-help if you have questions on policies.
Faculty can purchase these and other programs for their research on their PSA accounts. Faculty who need other programs for teaching should send the PRL a one-paragraph description of their need (with a copy to Kathleen McGraw if the software is expensive).
