Instructions for connecting to OSU computer services via a proxy server:

Using a proxy server is the only way to access OSU subscription services from computers that are not connected to an OSU network. These subscription services are sites such as Lexis/Nexis and JSTOR or other database type sites in the library listings that say "OSU Campus Only." To log on using a proxy server, you must change the settings in the internet browser you are using.

Instructions for Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer (5.0)

1. Click on the "Tools" drop down menu.
2. Select "Internet Options."
3. Click on the "Connections" tab in the middle of the top of the new window.
4. Click on the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom of the window.
5. Click on the empty square to select "Use a Proxy Server" a the bottom of the window.
6. In the now empty Address box, type: warp.net.ohio-state.edu.
7. In the empty Port box, type: 8080.
8. Click on the OK buttons.

Now, when you go to any URL, a login and password box will appear in which you will type your OSU login (name.#) and password. Be sure to turn this off be de-selecting the proxy server box when you are finished. Otherwise, you will have to give a login and password for every site, not just the subscription ones. When you want to reactivate the proxy server, simply follow the directions again and click on the Proxy server box. The Address and Port information will be saved for you.

In Netscape Navigator:

1. Click on the "Edit" drop down menu.
2. Select "Preferences" at the bottom of the menu.
3. On the left side of the new window will be a tree of various options. Click on the plus button to the left of the "Advanced" branch at the bottom of the tree.
4. From the "Advanced" tree, click on "Proxies" option.
5. In the box to the right, now click on the bottom selection, "Automatic Proxy Configuration."
6. In the newly open box, type: warp.net.ohio-state.edu.
7. Click on the OK button.
