Abstract

This paper argues for reading Marx’s Capital with Heidegger’s Being and Time (and vice versa). Yet how might we do so? Being and Time is, after all, typically seen to be an anti-Marxist book. This paper elucidates three areas where reading these books together illuminates our understanding of each. First I discuss Marx’s value theory in light of Heidegger’s conception of ontological difference. I then examine each book’s treatment of subjectivity. I conclude by comparing the two books’ political conclusions.

The Political Theory Workshop is a forum for the presentation of new research in all varieties of political theory and political philosophy, including work in the history of political thought; contributions to normative political theory; theoretical engagements with problems in contemporary politics and public policy; and theoretical reflection on fundamental political concepts or phenomena.
