Collegiate Council on World Affairs - A Year in Review

Collegiate Council group.

This has been a banner year for Collegiate Council on World Affairs – over the last two semesters, the organization has grown into one of the Ohio State University’s largest and most active academic interest groups with 90 official members and counting, and have continued to build their ties with the greater Columbus community.

The intercollegiate Model United Nations team, coming into existence only two years ago, was ranked #22 in Best Delegate’s Fall2013 North American college team rankings out of more than 400 teams on the circuit, overtaking prestigious schools such as Stanford, Cornell, and Princeton. OSU also became just the third school in history from the Midwest to be nationally ranked in Model UN. CCWA took home a total of 23 individual awards this year, as well as team-wide awards for Best Delegation at the Pennsylvania United Nations Conference and the Secretary General’s award at University of Chicago, for being the top Midwestern school at the conference.

CCWA hosted a number of their own conferences this year as well. In the fall, they held their second annual Model African Union Conference with Columbus North International High School, for which they were honored with the trophy for their annual Community Leadership award. In the winter, five colleges made the trek by planes and automobiles through a blizzard to the Longaberger Alumni House to attend MUNCOS, their largest and most elaborate collegiate conference to date. Their proudest moment this year, however, was this spring’s OSUMUN high school conference, which attracted seven Ohio schools and featured a variety of innovative committees, including a Scottish Independence Movement and a simulated EuroMaidan protest (pictured).

In addition to hosting conferences and simulations on different World Affairs topics, CCWA has also fostered an active journalism community through our development of The Algerian, an online publication dedicated to the late Dr. Chadwick Alger. The Algerian hosts articles from dozens or writers, and has gained huge degrees of attention and professional quality over the past year.

Their members also excelled academically. This year, to name just a few examples, they had recipients of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant program, the Foreign Language and Area Studies and Critical Language scholarships, and OSU’s first-ever recipient of the post-graduate Luce Scholarship. CCWA members were invited to international conferences and missions on Sustainable Development, Preventing Radicalization, US/Arab Relations, and trade facilitation. Overall, this was the most successful year in CCWA’s history, and they hope that their members will continue to impress them next year as they seek to expand ever further. The Algerian Website Image

We too look forward to watching CCWA grow and continue to be successful in the years to come.
