Graduate Research/Teaching/Placement

Graduate Student Research Graduate students in
the department are actively involved in research beyond normal class work.
Departmentally funded graduate assistants often work with faculty on research
projects, and there is considerable research collaboration between faculty and
graduate students and among graduate students. Many students have delivered
papers at professional meetings, with the department covering some of their
travel expenses, and a significant number have published in professional
journals and books.
Graduate Student Teaching Graduate students are
involved in teaching, an integral part of professional training. Graduate
assistants may assist faculty as graders or discussion section leaders for
undergraduate classes. Senior graduate students, after passing the candidacy
examination, are normally given the opportunity to teach classes on their own,
including introductory and specialized courses. This teaching experience gives
our graduate students an important edge when seeking teaching jobs, and it makes
it easier to begin a faculty career.
Ph. D.
Placement
The OSU Department of Political Science has
an excellent placement record. Our graduates have been very successful in
securing positions in major research universities and liberal arts colleges,
while others have pursued non-academic careers in government agencies,
nongovernmental organizations, and private industry.
Rather than providing a
sample of notable placement successes, we provide below a comprehensive list of
our placements. This includes all the data we have regarding where all of our
Ph.D.s since 1997 were placed or are currently employed. All academic positions
are tenure-track unless otherwise noted.
