Irfan Nooruddin
Assistant Professor of Political Science
Professor Nooruddin has research and teaching interests in comparative
politics, political economy of development, and political parties, with a focus on South Asia. His dissertation,
Credible Constraints: Political Institutions and Growth-Rate Volatility, investigates the effects of different
institutional configurations on governments' abilities to make credible commitments to investors and their
consequences for growth-rate volatility. He has also published research on economic sanctions in International
Interactions, and, with Pradeep Chhibber, on the provision of public goods in India in Comparative Political Studies and party fragmentation in India in an edited volume. Current projects include: a cross-national study of the determinants of public services spending (with Joel Simmons), a study of the effect of party unity on government spending (with Rob Franzese), and developing a new approach to understanding the deleterious effects of television viewership on associational membership (with Harwood McClerking, Kris Miler, and Bridget Coggins). Future projects include research on participation in IMF programs, the effect of IMF programs on public spending (with Joel Simmons), and the effect of violent conflict on economic growth (with Tom Flores).
