Professor Kessel is a generalist in American politics. In recent years, his research has focused on the presidency and political parties. His books include The Goldwater Coalition, The Domestic Presidency, Presidential Campaign Politics, and Presidential Parties. His articles have appeared in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Social Science Quarterly, Public Opinion Quarterly, and other journals. He has been editor of the American Journal of Political Science, and president of the Midwest Political Science Association.
