I. Many people think that religious groups are getting more active in politics these days. Some people feel that their involvement in politics will lead to higher moral standards in our country. Others feel that they should not have much influence in politics because church and state should be kept separate.

In a 1984 Gallup survey, a random sample of 1244 individuals who claimed to have a preference in either Protestant, Roman Catholic, or Jewish religion placed themselves on a 7-point scale in regard to the separation of church and state. A score of 1 on the scale indicates the respondent's full support for religious involvement in politics, and a score of 7 represents full approval of the separation of church and state. The scale is considered as an interval scale.

The following table is a summary of the respondents' attitude toward the issue on the separation of church and state:

RELIGIOUS GROUP          MEAN     STD DEV    CASES
--------------------------------------------------
PROTESTANTS             4.9706     2.0163      817
ROMAN CATHOLICS         5.2584     1.7352      387
JEWS                    6.0500     1.1972       40
